Land, sea and sky often offer a backdrop to anonymous figures, which are painted in a semi-abstract, expressive style. Bernie's work regularly features the English coastline, where the beach is symbolic of arrival or departure. Notions of home appear regularly as small totemic images of cottages and lighthouses as markers of security and comfort.
