Ingres, Pink Painting by Lindsay Simons
Oil on canvas, 100 x 100cm
Lindsay is a painter who explores how social constructs of female beauty and identity are represented in ‘old master’ painting and more recently in contemporary women. She wants to challenge the viewer by creating a simultaneous sense of classical art history and edgy cultural modernity.
Representations of paintings are cropped and then painted to mimic the original. She sometimes uses tumble dryer felt, table-cloths and lace doilies to refer to domesticity and the mundane processes of living. She explores the duality of foreground and background in the use of dribbled or layered paint and repeat wallpaper patterns.
